NGC4216 (Supernova SN 2024gy)
in Virgo
On 4 Jan. 2024, Koichi Itagaki, one of the most prolific supernova discoverers of our times, found a new transient in NGC 4216 which was quickly confirmed to be a type Ia supernova. The supernova was estimated to be as bright as mag 13.2 – 16.3. The host galaxy, NGC 4216, is a member of the Virgo cluster and it is an almost edge-on spiral galaxy.
